RESULTS SWISS TEAM CHALLENGE 2019 @ CrossFit Basel

Das diesjährige Motto wurde voll erfüllt!

Zum 10. Jährigen Jubiläum der Swiss Team CHallenge nahmen rund 766 Teams (über 3000 CrossFit-AthletInnen), in über 80 Boxen schweizweit die Challenge in Angriff.

Davon 9 Firebreather, 26 Regular und 5 Rookie Teams die in unserer Box, CrossFit Basel antraten. Wir freuten uns auch dieses Jahr wieder über den Besuch von externen Teams und senden viele Grüsse an Reebok CrossFit Augsburg, CrossFit Barbell Bros und CrossFit Lörrach! Großartig, dass ihr da ward!

Schon um 8h startete die Registration und der erste Kaffee wurde an der Bar gezaubert und um 8:45h konnten wir alle Teilnehmer und Zuschauer begrüssen. Die Aufregung vor dem ersten Event um 9h stieg langsam…

Event 1/WOD 1 & 2 war ein klassischer Auftakt für die Swiss Team CHallenge. Eine Person stehts auf dem Rower und die anderen drei kämpften sich durch Double Unders, KB swings, KB snatches, Handstand push ups, sowohl strict als auch kipping, und box jumps. Wer es soweit schaffte und das Ende erreichte, wurde mit AMRAP Partner Wall Balls belohnt. Absprache und Zusammenarbeit waren gefragt. Danach waren alle gut aufgewärmt und endgültig im Wettkampf-Modus!

Event 2 bestand aus 3 separat gewerteten Teilen. Wod 3 war ein 5min AMRAP Barbell Complex, bestehend aus jeweils 5 shoulder to overhead, 5 frontsquats und 5 power cleans. Ohne Pause gings dann in den heavy Teil der Swiss Team CHallenge. 10 Minuten hatten die TeilnehmerInnen Zeit um ihr 1 RM Clean and Jerk des Tages zu finden, es durfte nur eine Stange verwendet werden. Das Stresslevel stieg kurz an um Gewichte zusammen zu zählen und die Stange richtig zu beladen. Im Anschluss folgte wieder ein 5 Minuten AMRAP bestehend aus Ring Muscle up oder ring pull ups, Handstandwalk oder bearcrawl und Pistols oder Box step ups. Hier konnte man seine Skills zeigen.

Vor Event 3/WOD 8 & 9 wurden die bisherigen Ergebnisse ausgewertet und die letzten Heatlisten erstellt. Ausreichend Zeit um sich etwas in der Sonne zu entspannen, sich zu stärken und mit einem kalten Shake oder anderem Kaltgetränk an der Bar zu erfrischen. Bei dieser Gelegenheit ein fettes Dankeschön und Respekt an alle Helfer und Judges für die tolle Arbeit! Bereits zu diesem Zeitpunkt hattet ihr schon Grosses geleistet!

Event 3 bestand aus burpees, snatches, pull ups, thrusters, chest to bar pull ups, HEAVY partner deadlifts und bar muscle ups. Die Firebreathers durften einiges davon sogar synchron ausführen. Was für eine Stimmung zum Schluss!

Ein Time Cap von 26 Minuten war gesetzt. Für einige war früher Schluss, einige mussten bis zur letzten Minute kämpfen.

Das Geschrei und die Musik waren laut, die Stimmung war bombig und danach sah es auch so aus. Als hätte eine Bombe eingeschlagen. Grosses Kino. Alle waren erschöpft aber zufrieden als auch das letzte Heat gegen 18:00 durch war.

Im Anschluss wurde die ganzen Ranglisten schnellstmöglich erstellt und die Rangverkündigung begann.

Wir sind stolz auf euch ALLE! Es war toll zu erleben, wie motiviert ihr seid und wie der Sport uns verbindet. Bleibt dran, habt Spass und es wird spannend sein, zu sehen, was wir noch alles gemeinsam erreichen können.

Man kann es nicht oft genug erwähnen: Ein grosses Dankeschön geht an die Organisatoren und das Team von CrossFit Basel und CrossFit Leman, an die „Ganztageshelfer“ beim Scoring (Pedee und Nicole!), an der Registration (Maike, Franziska), beim Auf- und Umbau (CrossFit Basel Coaches, Samuel, David, Alice, Pascale) und allen (!) Judges – einfach an jeden Helfer für jeden noch so „kleinen“ Handschlag und geplanten oder spontanen Einsatz! An Jaz für die Unterhaltung. An Nane Sele und an Döne für die top Verpflegung, Meat and Greet die mit ihrem Foodtruck vor Ort waren und uns mit Burgern versorgten und die Jungs und Mädels an der Bar. Ebenfalls ein grosses Dankeschön geht an unsere Sponsoren Nocco und Marcus Mcclain von CrossFit DACH und crossfitdeutschland. Last but not least natürlich auch an die starken Teams und an das fantastische Publikum!

I think this year’s motto has been fulfilled!

For the tenth anniversary of the Swiss Team CHallenge, 766 teams, over 3000 CrossFit athletes, tackled the challenge in over 80 boxes throughout Switzerland. Of these, 9 firebreathers, 26 regular and 5 rookie teams competed in our box, CrossFit Basel. We were also happy about the visit of external teams this year and send many greetings to Reebok CrossFit Augsburg, CrossFit Barbell Bros and CrossFit Lörrach! It was great that you were here!

The registration started at 8am and the first coffee was conjured up at the bar. Nane Sele set up the stove for the hungry pack and at 8: 45h we welcomed all participants and spectators. The excitement before the first event at 9am rose slowly.

Event 1 / WOD 1 & 2 was a classic prelude to the Swiss Team Challenge. One person is standing on the rower and the other three fought their way through Double Unders, KB swings, KB snatches, handstand push ups, both strict and kipping, and box jumps. If you made it to the end, you were then rewarded with AMRAP Wall Balls. Agreement and cooperation were required. After that, everyone was well warmed up and finally in the mode!

Event 2 consisted of 3 separate parts. Wod 3 was a 5min AMRAP Barbell Complex consisting of 5 shoulder to overhead, 5 front squats and 5 power cleans. Without a break we went into the heavy part of the Swiss Team Challenge. For 10 minutes the participants had time to find their 1 RM Clean and Jerk of the day. The problem here, it was only allowed to use one barbell. This was followed by a 5 minute AMRAP ring of ring muscle up or ring pull ups, handstand walk or bearcrawl and pistols or box step ups. Here you could show your skills.

Event 3 / WOD 8 & 9 the previous results were evaluated and the last heat lists were created. Enough time to relax in the sun, fortify yourself and refresh yourself with a cold shake or cold drink at the bar. On this occasion, a big thank you and respect to all helpers and judges for the great work! Already at that time, you had done a great job! Event 3 consisted of burpees, snatches, pull ups, thrusters, chest to bar pull ups, HEAVY deadlifts and bar muscle ups. The Firebreathers were even forced to do some of this synchronized. What a mood at the end! A time cap of 26 minutes was set. Some had an end earlier, some had to fight until the last minute.

The screaming and the music was loud, the atmosphere was awesome and after that it looked like that. As if a bomb had hit. Big cinema. All were exhausted but satisfied as the last heat was around 18:00.

Afterwards, the whole rankings were created as fast as possible and the announcement of the rank began.

CrossFit Games Open 2019 // RECAP

It’s done! Once again.

The CrossFit Open: every year, these five weeks stir up mixed emotions. A cocktail of expectancy, high hopes, impatience and joy mixed with apprehension, respect and maybe a pinch of fear.

The Open 2019 ended with 19.5. A nasty WOD witch included 105 thrusters and 105 chest to bar pull ups!

Looks simple and „easy“ but it was a real mindf**k. A nice grueling finisher after 5 weeks of pure CrossFit. „Constantly varied functional movements performed at high intensity.“

Some people are happy that it’s over. Sleepless Thursday-nights before the workout-announcement. The fear for Burpees and Thrusters…sore muscles and pain faces all over the place.

But as tough it was, it was also a great time to grow as a person and as a community. We had 106 CFBS/Downtown-Athletes who signed up for the Open 2019! Great work peeps! The team spirit was awesome and it was beautiful to see how you guys are helping each other out by cheering and offering support. That’s what those times are about. Growing stronger – physically and physiologically as a human.

This year the Open showed the direction of how the sport is developing. Weights and skills are getting „heavier“. The first time in history we saw a strict movement at the Open! More people chose the scaled variation. But that’s not a bad thing. It’s just an option to make the experience possible for more people. It is also showing us that almost nothing is impossible and that there’s always a way to improve and „get better than yesterday“.

Fist I want to thank the Team Captains. You managed your team, where there if needed, ordered and designed shirts, answered thousands of questions and organized some team events outside of the box! 

Thanks for your effort Lani Messner, Jolanda Holzherr, Tabea Jandt, Linda Bräutigam, Lena Gebhart and Francis Fink. Without you the Open like we know it wouldn’t be possible!

Next are our photographers Lucie Pfändler and G-Jay. They came late at night or at the weekend to the box to capture these magical moments at the box. Maybe they captured someone’s first muscle up, outstanding performance or just some pain faces. Still, we are very grateful that you were there and took these cool pictures.

At the last Saturday, we had CrossFit DACH visiting us. Thanks a lot to Marcus Mcclain for coming over, do a lifestream on crossfitdeutschland Instagram account, bring some shirts and meat for the party later! In this manner, I want to thank Bejtula Jasari as well. He organized some or rather a lot of beverages for the party!

We must not forget the coaches. They did a lot of overtime in these 5 weeks, had to manage the special classes on Friday, answered all the questions about the Open and still had to perform when they did the WOD themselves. Thanks a lot for your extra effort over this exhausting time!

Last but not least we want to thank everyone who participated in this years CrossFit Games Open. It doesn’t matter if you are a veteran, master, teen or first-timer, all of you have done your best and earned the title of a survivor of the Open! It was every single time a pleasure to come to the box and see each of you perform, struggle or succeed. The atmosphere over this time is different and breathtaking. So much energy, support, laughter, sweat in one place – that’s just great!

I’m really looking forward to the next CrossFit Games Open which takes place in October already. Now it’s time to recover and get back into training as soon as possible. There is no time to waste. Take the energy from the Open with you into every single CrossFit Class and try to become the best version of you.

Some „deep thoughts“ at the end:

The Open are always my favorite time of the year, when we live and breath CrossFit. The Open’s essence is the community and high intensity. The simple beauty of CrossFit. 

Teaching CrossFit at Trainer Courses we would always joke, that in a globo gym nobody would cheer at you doing bicep curls. And it’s true. During the Open so many new personal bests get achieved because of the support of others. People cross barriers, become better athletes, overcome weaknesses and perform well over their expectations simply because the crowd is cheering them to do so. The Open is a catalyst of the possible. People doing things they thought are not possible for them, mentally as well as physically. Hard work pays off. 

Personally, I love the thrill of the Open workouts, the set-up, the late night nervosity. I love to do the workouts in one of the official heats with other members. Bit of shit talk here and there. But I also want to perform well and I will go well beyond my comfort zone, something I would not do so well being alone with a judge.

I want to thank all participants and the captains, Marco and all the coaches for their help, their support but also for their great effort. It was a fantastic five weeks!

Like every year, there are no CrossFit Open without thrusters and chest to bar pull ups!
This year we had to manage 105 repetitions of each of them. Not an easy task. Only a few members were able to finish all this reps within the 20-minute time cap.

Our box owner itself showed us how it is done. Ramon finished the WOD in 16 minute and 44 seconds – first place of the CrossFit Basel and CrossFit Basel Downtown. Also our Head coach from CrossFit Basel Downtown Pascale Hermann showed the girls how to handle the thrusters and chest to bar pull ups. She finished the WOD in 17 minutes and 41 seconds!

Congrats to team Fight clap! With a nice team spirit and some team events outside of the box, you definitely earned this title.

Our prayers were not answered! No Open without Burpees.
And not too few of them.
With the muscle ups or chin over bar pull-ups in the second part, the gymnastics skills were also required.

Only one of our members was able to finish the WOD. Congratulations to Stephan Metzger who finished the WOD in 11:54! Congratulations on this great performance!

This hard WOD wasn’t easy to manage. Even the „scaled“ version included strict HSPU and 50 DB box step ups. But when the hair is still on point and you can still smile – the world is all right!

19.2 was a repeater of 16.2, so some knew the struggle already.

Beginning on an 8-minute clock, complete as many reps as possible of:
25 toes-to-bars
50 double-unders
15 squat cleans, 135 lb.
25 toes-to-bars
50 double-unders
13 squat cleans, 185 lb.
If completed before 8 minutes, add 4 minutes to the clock and proceed to:
25 toes-to-bars
50 double-unders
11 squat cleans, 225 lb.
If completed before 12 minutes, add 4 minutes to the clock and proceed to:
25 toes-to-bars
50 double-unders
9 squat cleans, 275 lb.

The combination of weightlifting and gymnastics offered something for everyone. Some had trouble with the double-unders or the toes-to-bar, others with the heavy lifts. So everyone has still room for improvement.

Thursday night/ Friday night, February the 22nd 2019, the first WOD of the CrossFit Games Open was released. Some woke up at night to check their phones but everyone was excited to see what’s going on.

Looks quite easy but it was a real sucker. 

I would like to quote Ramons‘ words about the Open:

One year ago I already wrote:

„First week down. The box is literally vibrating. Five weeks in which everyone is nervous and the air is full of tension.

I love the opens and I hate it as well. I love it, because people seem to be more alive. They want to achieve something – they have goals they want to reach, they compete against each other. I love to see their smiles if they did much better than expected.

I also love to see their fear cause I know this experience will teach them a lesson in life as well.

I hate it (sarcasm right there ;)) because it is extremely time-consuming and it’s hardly possible to get any other work done during these five weeks. Our team invests plenty of extra time and effort to make this happen for you!“

Well, this did not really change! It’s one of my favorite times of the year, people are alive, they share their success, they suffer together, workout together, have fun together!

105 athletes registered for our two boxes! Not as much as last year but still amazing!

CFHQ seems to have some IT-troubles and so not everybody was able to submit a score.

Our top male Athlete, David Dieterle, aka DIDI, aka DIDI Sorglos, is sitting in the 48th place overall in Switzerland – congratulations to this outstanding performance!

On the female side, we have Lani Messner sitting in the outstanding 16th place overall in Switzerland! Keep pushing it to the limit Lani.

Also congratulations to all the first timer, who did their first CrossFit Open Workout! You did great and I hope it was at least a little bit of fun.

Very close! YAY Burpees in first place with the best Spirit. Huge mutual support and the first Team with a mascot. In the following picture, it shows the emotional state after 19.1.

9 Gold Medaillen und drei neue Schweizer Rekorde. Starke Bilanz für den Gewichtheber Club beider Basel (GHCBB)!

Am Samstag, den 21. Oktober wurde im CrossFit Basel zum vierten Mal in Folge die Deutschschweizer Meisterschaft im Olympischen Gewichtheben ausgetragen. Dank dem steigenden Interesse an der Schwerathletik konnte auch dieses Mal einen neuen Teilnahmerekord erzielt werden. Am Wettkampf Tag massen sich 49 Athletinnen und Athleten im Reissen und Stossen.

Das Team vom Gewichtheber Club beider Basel (CrossFit Basel) stellte 31 Athletinnen und Athleten, darunter 6 Athletinnen und 6 Athleten die als Gastheber/innen ohne Lizenz und zum ersten Mal an einem Gewichtheberwettkampf antraten.

Der Club holte insgesamt 9x Gold, 4x Silber und 7x Bronze Medaillen und erzielte drei neue Schweizer Rekorde im Stossen! Agnes Polgar (Kat. -58kg) mit 82kg und Seraina Hochstrasser (Kat. -75kg) mit 102kg stemmten zum ersten Mal einen Nationalen Rekord. Nora Jäggi (Kat. -69kg) verbesserte ihren eigenen Rekord im Stossen auf 109kg und ebenfalls ihr Total im Zweikampf auf 193kg.

Ramon Gysin und Nora Jäggi wurden weiter als ‚Best Lifter‘ des Wettkampfes ausgezeichnet. Diese Wertung repräsentiert das beste Sinclair Resultat des Tages.

Die Preise wurden dieses Jahr von Chloe Baumgartner (Frischaktiv) und der Migros (MIGROS) gesponsert.Ein herzliches Dankeschön an Chloe Baumgartner und Melsa ‚Melsi‘ Dogan für die Organisation der Preise.

9 gold medals and three new swiss records. Basels Weightlifting Club lifts very strong at the Swissgerman Championship.

Saturday October 21st for the fourth time in a row CrossFit Basel hosted the swissgerman olympic weightlifting championship. 49 athletes from all the german speaking parts of switzerland travelled to our Box CrossFit Basel to compete against each other.

Our weightlifting team was represented by 31 athletes. For 12 lifters it was the first time competing in a weightlifting meeting as guest lifters.

Basels club won 9x Gold, 4 silver and 7 bronze medals. Three ladies realized a new swiss record in the clean and jerk. Agnes Polgar (cat. -58kg) with 82kg and Seraina Hochstrasser (cat. -75kg) with 102kg lifted a national record for the first time in their career. Nora Jäggi (cat. -69kg) improved her previous record to now 109kg and the total to 193kg. Congratulations Ladies!

Ramon Gysin and Nora Jäggi won the ‚best lifter‘ award. This result repersents the highest sinclair result of the day.

GHCBB stark an der Schweizermeisterschaft

Our girls back on stage

GHCBB erfolgreich in Lausanne!

Am 2. September fand die Elite Schweizer Meisterschaft im Olympischen Gewichtheben statt. Das CrossFit Lausanne war der Schauplatz eines erfolgreichen Wettkampfes für den GHCBB.

Um sich für diesen Wettkampf zu qualifizieren muss man einerseits an zwei von den vier Ligarunden mitgemacht haben und in einer Runde ein Total von mindestens 140 Sinclair Punkten bei den Damen oder 225 Punkte bei den Herren erreichen.

Die Schweizermeisterschaft wird, wie bei einem internationalen Turnier, in verschiedenen Gewichtsklassen ausgetragen. Zwei Stunden vor Wettkampfbeginn wird abgewogen und der Athlet der in seiner Gewichtsklasse am meisten über den Kopf hebt gewinnt.

Die Bilanz am Ende des Tages wiederspiegelt die starken Leistungen der bisherigen Saison. Von den 11 angereisten Athleten erreichten 8 einen Podestplatz. Davon sind 5 Schweizermeister Titel.

Gewichtsklasse -85kg:

Dieses Plateau war nichts für schwache Nerven.  Nach zwei ungültigen Versuchen konnte Tom doch noch seinen allerletzten Versuch im Reissen realisieren. Somit startete er mit einem 3kg Vorsprung in das Stossen. Dort lieferte er sich ein Kopf an Kopf Rennen mit Vasco Corti vom CrossFit Lugano. Handicapiert durch ein entzündetes Knie konnte Tom nicht seine stärksten Lifts abrufen.  Vasco konnte profitieren und stemmte in seinem letzten Versuch 139kg gültig über den Kopf. 4kg mehr als Tom und somit nur 1kg mehr im Total.

Der nächste Wettkampf, die Deutschschweizer Meisterschaft, findet am Samstag 21. Oktober im CrossFit Basel statt. Kommt vorbei und erlebt das Gewichtheben hautnah.

GHCBB successful in Lausanne!

Saturday the 2nd of September the Swiss Championship in Olympic Weightlifting took place in Lausanne. Another successful competition for the Basel Weightlifting Club.

To qualify for this meet on one side you have to participate in two rounds of the swiss league and post a total of not less than 140 (female) or 225 (male) sinclair points.

The scoring in the Elite Swiss Championship works the same way as international tournaments. The athletes are divided into different weight classes accordingly to their bodyweight. Two hours before the competiton starts you have to weigh in and the athlete who puts the most weight over his head wins his category.

The ranking list at the end of this day reflects the very strong performance of the previous season. Eight of the eleven athletes competing that day accomplish a podium spot. Five of them are swiss championship titles.

This group was nothing for weak nerves. First Tom waited until his very last try to post a vaild snatch. He had a 3kg lead going into the Clean&Jerk over Vasco Corti from Lugano. The Clean and Jerk was a head to head race between these two. Vasco showed his best lifting game and put 139kg over his head. 4kg more than Tom who was handicaped by an inflammation in the knee and only one tiny kilogram more in the total. Congratulations to both of them for this outstanding performance.
