REEBOK CROSSFIT GAMES OPEN 2017 17.1

Open Workout 17.1

WhatsApp Image 2017-02-25 at 17.40.59

Thursdaynight/ Fridaynight, February the 24th 2017, the first WOD of the CrossFit Games Open was released. Some woke up at night to check their phones. Everyone was excited to see what’s going on.

And there it was: the Dumbbell-calypse…

Workout 17.1

  • 10 DB Snatches
  • 15 Burpee Boxjump-overs
  • 20 DB Snatches
  • 15 Burpee Boxjump-overs
  • 30 DB Snatches
  • 15 Burpee Boxjump-overs
  • 40 DB Snatches
  • 15 Burpee Boxjump-overs
  • 50 DB Snatches
  • 15 Burpee Boxjump-overs

Men 50lb dumbbell /24 inch box
Women 35lb dumbbell /20 inch box

All details here.

Looks quite easy but it was a real Sucker.

With the Dumbbell Snatches also a new equipment and movement has been introduced.

I would like to quote Ramons‘ words about the Open:

One year ago I already wrote:

„First week down. The box is literally vibrating. Five weeks in which everyone is nervous and the air is full of tension.

I love the opens and I hate it as well. I love it, because people seem to be more alive. They want to achieve something – they have goals they want to reach, they compete against each other. I love to see their smiles if they did much better than expected.

I also love to see their fear cause I know this experience will teach them a lesson in life as well.

I hate it (sarcasm right there ;)) because it is extremely time consuming and it’s hardly possible to get any other work done during these five weeks. Our team invests plenty of extra time and effort to make this happen for you!“

Well, this did not really change! It’s one of my favourite times of the year, people are alive, they share there success, they suffer together, workout together, have fun together!

WhatsApp Image 2017-02-25 at 18.01.48

120 athletes registered for our two boxes! Amazing!

After that nice suckfest the overall CFBS-Top-Ten-leaderboard looks like this:

The Team is currently sitting on place 81 in europe but we have to wait till the deadline is over. CFHQ seems to have big IT-troubles and they extended the period to submit your score. We’re still wondering how many Re- and Re-Redo’s happened…

But for now we have 7 Girls in the Top 20 in switzerland:

Alessia Joy Wälchli (first place!), Jana Sollberger, Sarah Mentzen, Aline Seebacher, Nora Jäggi, Jessica Preis, Katrin Luethy.

The Top 5 at CrossFit Basel and CFBaselDowntown are:

  • Alessia (11:41)
  • Jana (13:24)
  • Sarah (14:11)
  • Aline (14:15)
  • Nora (14:24)
  • Ramon Gysin (15:04)
  • Sascha Albini (15:06)
  • Joel Wächter (15:28)
  • Tom Schwander (16:13)
  • Benoit Luthy (16:16)

We want to give a special mention to our masters! There are 16 Masters from division 35-59 (!) which belong to the fittest Top 20!  Respekt!

F.ex. Sascha is on first place in the 40-44 years group and Jana (2.) and Katrin (4.) are Top 5 in the 35-39 division in Switzerland. Way to go!

Current standings of CrossFit Basel and CrossFit Basel Downtowns internal Open competition:

Very close! On the third place: The Bomb Squad with the best Spirit, marketing and merchandising.

The Bully-Buddies aka Team Tizi are second. Quietly hidden but successfull.

The DT Outlaws are at the top! Maybe also because of the power of the powerbelly himself? Anyway: Slothfit for life!

Let’s see what next! 17.2 is near.

Reebok CrossFit Games Open 2017 – let’s do it again!

The Reebok CrossFit Games season 2017 begins with the worldwide CROSSFIT GAMES OPEN – on February 23 2017!! Our ambition is to qualify again for the CrossFit Regionals Europe where we were part of since 2011-2014 and just missed it by 2 points in 2015 – challenge accepted!!

What are the CrossFit Games?

Anyone can sign up to compete in five workouts over five weeks and post their scores online. There are several categories including a scaled one.

Last year, the Open reached more than 320’000 athletes from around the world. The next stage of the CrossFit Games season are the CrossFit Regionals. Competitors need to finish near the top of their region’s Leaderboard. The top five men, five women and five teams at the end of each three-day regional competition will receive invitations to the CrossFit Games in the US, where the fittest person on Earth will be crowned.

Whether you are a beginner, an advanced athlete, junior or master – the CrossFit Games Open are accessible for anyone. There is already a whole slew of athletes from CrossFit Basel who are currently prepping for the competition. Join them and let’s compete side by side!!

We’ve had people get their first pull-ups, first toes to bar, first muscle up, set a PR on a clean and jerk, and on and on and on, all during the Open, because of the atmosphere and the community. It’s hard to put into words. Kind of like when your friends say “So tell me what this CrossFit stuff is all about.”

On February 23, 2017 at 5pm PST (Fridaynight 1am for us) the first Open Workout will be released. Athletes have four days – until Mondaynight 1am – to absolve the workout. Judges will score the performance and you will have to submit your results to the Games site online. A new workout will be released every Thursdaynight within these five weeks (end of Open Games: March 27th, 2017). A scaled option of the Open workout will be released each week of the Open too. With reduced loading or less challenging movements, the scaled option will be designed to make the Open even more accessible.

Basil doing 16.2

Let’s DO THIS!!

Because it was so much fun last year, we will again organise a so called „Intramural Open“-Event:

All of CrossFit Basel’s registered athletes will be divided in four teams. Every Team has a Captain. Our best athletes will be spread amongst those 4 teams in a draft (tbd).

CrossFit Basel Downtown will also have a team.

This years Captains are: Tiziano Nardella, Döne Bonina, Nicole Reichmuth and Daniel Hoffmann. CFBS DT will be lead by Lorenz Kuske.

Starting tonight, it is up to YOU: Go, sign up!!

Each team will come up with their own team name, colors, all that fun stuff! Want to make shirts – go for it! Noisemakers – go for it! The goal is to have as much fun as humanly possible while challenging yourself to be better than yesterday.

Talk to one of the Captains if you want to compete in their team, we will hang out registration sheets at the box starting next Tuesday!

Now, because we’re creating teams that will compete against one another, we’ve got to have a scoring system, right? To promote fun and encourage everyone to participate, here are how you can help your team score points:

1 point for showing up and posting a score online (no matter what category you compete).
5 points if all teammates earn an official score on the workout.
1-3 points per athlete that finishes in the top three in the box (male/female, 1st 3 points, 2nd 2 points, 3rd 1 point).
5 points for the team with the best spirit.
8 points (team) – Team Bonding: If your team gets together socially outside of the gym (ALL of you – pic posted on our FB page as proof)…you get points. This is a one time bonus, you can do it as many times as you like but it will only earn you points once. It can be done at any point during the 5 weeks.

After the final Open workout on Saturday March 25th, we’re going to host a big BBQ at the box and present awards. Details will be announced soon.

CrossFit Basel offers Workout Times at the box. These are as follows:

  • Friday, 8pm – 11pm
  • Saturday, 2:30pm – 6:30pm
  • Sunday, 4:30pm – 6pm
  • Monday, 2:30pm – 4:30pm (exclusively reserved for Competition-Athletes) / 8:30pm – 10pm

EACH FRIDAY AND SATURDAY THE NEW LOUNGE WILL BE OPEN!

We strongly recommend doing the workout Friday or Saturday.

Please be aware of workout time changes. Stay tuned on our Facebook page or ask the coaches!

We genuinely want to encourage all of you to register for this competition. Not only will it be challenging and a ton of fun to compete within the community, but it is the perfect chance to gather competition experience and to figure out your current position with your performance and strength in CrossFit.

15663676028_fff6d44525_kBecome a Judge!!

In order to keep up with the international standards, all workouts must be scored by certified judges. Anyone who is interested is allowed or better asked to take this course and become a judge! You can simply take the course of six modules here. This course includes general information on competition rules, regulations and common movements.

CrossFit Basel at the CrossFit Games Regionals Europe since 2011!

Let’s take a quick review on CrossFit Basel’s performances at the CrossFit Games Open/Regionals:

The first time we sent athletes to the CrossFit Games Regionals Europe was back in 2011. Former Coach Claudia competed in the category Women Individuals and placed 18th. Read the article from back in the days here!

We did not miss out on the Regionals in 2012 and competed as a team and individual. The team placed 18th and Ramon Gysin who competed as Individual won Event 5, the ‚Snatch Ladder‘. He made it to the final and finished strong with a 15th place out of 60 athletes!

Also, see the teams in action!

Find the whole report about 2012:

REEBOK CROSSFIT GAMES REGIONALS EUROPE: Team CrossFit Basel in Kopenhagen

2013: Tom Schwander (ranked 47) and Nadine Steinger (ranked 33) entered the Regionals as Individuals, plus we sent two teams!

This time the teams finished with a strong 19th and 23rd place.

CrossFit Regionals Europe 2013

2014: A team of our best athletes travelled to Copenhagen to take the challenge of the CrossFit Games Regionals Europe. This time they came in 15th!!

We are certainly proud of our qualifications 4 times in a row and will give our best to be part of the Regional Games in Madrid this year as well. Also important to point out is that the teams of athletes varied from year to year. Overall, we sent TWENTY different athletes to the Reebok CrossFit Games Regionals Europe during these four years. This shows that we follow a concept and strategy that works. Considering that the qualifications get tougher each year, we can be proud to be well in the loop with the fittest people on Earth.

Headcoach Ramon Gysin sums up the numbers, what, why and how of Open WOD 16.5:

Yes, that’s how bad it was. I can still hardly type, as my triceps are screaming.

When I woke up Friday early in the morning to check out what came out of Dave’s mind for 16.5, I was a little bit disappointed: Repeat 14.5. Burpees AGAIN.

But it’s still one of my favourite Open WODs because there is no timecap and its a grueling one. Mentally very tough, Thrusters and Burpees, most people hate them.

And back in 2014 when this WOD first came up, there was not even a scaled option, so some people really fought forever to get the WOD done. This is also the beauty of CrossFit, it is for sure not easy and it teaches you a lesson every now and then.

Kudos also to the many people at our box and around the globe for going rx’d in this WOD. Special mention to Gee-Jay (34:10), Tamara Lutz (28:59) and Dora Seebacher for not going scaled. Dora was our oldest competitor (sorry, usually I try to avoid talking about a lady’s age) this year (rx’d Masters 55-59 18:36).

The internet is now full of people complaining, the Opens have been too light and to easy, despite having a scaled version now. I say it again, in my opionion, the scaled version is to down scale, so more people can do the opens (rasining registration numbers confirm this believe). It’s not meant to have scaled as the old rx’d and therefor make the rx’d heavier than what it was in the past.

There were new movements introduced with the lunge and the bar muscle-up. Other than that no suprises about the exercises. Also no surprises about the length of the Open WODs. All pretty normal.

The Opens have always been a lot of reps and therefor a lot of Cardio. Many potentially good Regionals Athletes will not make it past the Open, because the light WODs with a lot of reps are a weakness.

After the Open you should also take a moment and sit down, think about where YOUR weaknesses are. The Opens are fantastic for me as a coach. There is thousands of data points and as you rank against other people, you can see very clear, where you are strong, or weak, compared to your peers.

It has been a fantastic five weeks with downs and ups. We missed our goal to qualify for regionals as a team, but we will continue to work hard and try it again. There have been some new(er) athletes in our team with strong performances and we will help them grow further.

In the meanwhile you will see our competitors potentially at some minor european competitions during the year (Regionals is still THE major competition).

BUT, we definitely reached our main goal, strenghtening the community within CrossFit Basel and CrossFit Basel Downtown. It has been amazing to see how you guys connected, cheered and helped each other. With at outstanding number of 104 registered athletes almost every 5th member competed in the Opens.

As I Coach I am very proud of everybody’s achievements! You pushed yourself very hard and many of you learned new skills, performed stronger than expected. This is the magic of a competitive community. We fight together, struggle together and then share the rewards together.

I am already looking forward to next years as I have some improvements in my mind. If you want to give me feedback, do not hesitate to reach out to me via email: rg@crossfitbasel.ch

Noooot.

Now some numbers and final performance analysis:

This is copied straight from the CrossFit Games Open Rule book:

„The team Leaderboard is unofficial and subject to change until all Individual athletes have completed the video review process and either accepted or rejected their invitation to compete at regionals.“

The final team leaderboard will be available mid April. In the past, our team jumped up about ten places in the ranking after the individual competitors were sorted out from their teams.

The following leaderboard is just provisionally.

Rankings so far in Region Europe:

RankingCFBS16.5

Consistent performance, despite falling back to rank 58.

Check out this page for an official analysis from the games site.

Alessia is the third best female CrossFitter in Switzerland, great Job congrats!

With Jessi, Katrin, Pascale and Aline we have four more girls in the swiss top 20!

Me and Tom rank in the top 30 (Joel also, if he had put in a score for 16.4 😉 ). Jona in the top 50.

CF Turicum will most likely be the only german speaking Box with a team at Regionals (they have two individuals who will potentially go individual, their scores will not count anymore towards the team).

Myleo from Berlin and also CF Munich performed strong but are too far out of the top 20.

Our team has undergone a change again since last year. Our best male competitor declined injured and on the girls side there were also different athletes scoring. This means two things. First it is another proof we are doing a great job to bring up new athletes. Second, life happens and its hard to perform well and build up over years.

Either we grow with the nordic competition or we hope for a split of Europe into two Regions. Kidding, of course Europe should be splitted, because it was by far the strongest region. But on the other hand, the south just has to work harder, including us. Enough said.

FINAL standings of CrossFit Basel and CrossFit Basel Downtowns internal Open competition:

Headcoach Ramon Gysin sums up the numbers, what, why and how of Open WOD 16.3:

What a nice Chipper. The Deadlift will fatique your rowing. The Wall Balls will fatique your Handstand Push-ups. Where this is a great opportunity for people going rx’d even when they are struggling with certain skills or gymnastics, for the higher level athletes this one really came down on how well you perform at Handstand Push-ups. I said it last year and I will repeat it again. Some people are born to do Handstand Push-ups and others aren’t. Leverage makes a huge difference (and so did various interpretations on standards, but let’s not elaborate on that…).

Our team peformed very consistent with an outstanding performance of Alessia Wälchli, she is the female top scorer in Switzerland. Congratulations!

We have still 5 Girls in the top 20 of Switzerland.

Headcoach Ramon Gysin sums up the numbers, what, why and how of Open WOD 16.3:

Again a new movement. Dave Castro was making this one really exciting. At the announcement show he demonstrated the movements himself. Only a small group inside the HQ knows the WOD beforehand. At the time of the announcement he was hosting a party at our friends Box in Milano, Reebok CrossFit Officine. After demonstrating the snatches he then walked over to the rig and pointed to the rings, but then performed Bar Muscle-Ups instead. A nice twist.

Many people struggled with the grip and their ability to perform a Bar Muscle-Up when already tired and gassed and the Leaderboard was shuffled around quite a bit.

What I really liked, that many people, not only at our box, but world wide, got their first bar muscle up. We also had some athletes getting their first bar muscle up and then many more. That’s what we preach beforehand, the Opens really push and motivate people and many perform beyond their imagination. Great stuff.

Workout 16.2

Beginning on a 4-minute clock, complete as many reps as possible of:
25 toes-to-bars
50 double-unders
15 squat cleans, 135 / 85 lb.

If completed before 4 minutes, add 4 minutes to the clock and proceed to:
25 toes-to-bars
50 double-unders
13 squat cleans, 185 / 115 lb.

If completed before 8 minutes, add 4 minutes to the clock and proceed to:
25 toes-to-bars
50 double-unders
11 squat cleans, 225 / 145 lb.

If completed before 12 minutes, add 4 minutes to the clock and proceed to:
25 toes-to-bars
50 double-unders
9 squat cleans, 275 / 175 lb.

If completed before 16 minutes, add 4 minutes to the clock and proceed to:
25 toes-to-bars
50 double-unders
7 squat cleans, 315 / 205 lb.

Stop at 20 minutes.

All details here.

Headcoach Ramon Gysin sums up the numbers, what, why and how of Open WOD 16.2:

Yes, Toes to bars (many), Double Unders and Squat Cleans. Aaaaand a flow, that looks familiar:

12186744_1681948245377073_5298372659650921924_o

This workout was about pacing your ability in either one of the movements, mainly Toes to bars and Squat Cleans. Find the optimal pace for the Toes to Bar or the Squat Cleans. Get through the Double Unders quick. Try to survive one challenging round and give it your all in the last four minutes. Ending far in the Squat cleans in your final round, that hurt. But so it is.

From my own perspective it was a very painful workout, heck, I did it twice. Stupid me.

Some seemed to agree:

Headcoach Ramon Gysin sums up the numbers, what, why and how of Open WOD 16.1:

One year ago I wrote:

Thursdaynight, February 25th 2016, the first WOD of the CrossFit Games Open was released. We were all eagerly waiting to see what they came up with this time. Here’s what we got:

Workout 16.1

Complete as many rounds and reps as possible in 20 minutes of:
25-ft. overhead walking lunge
8 burpees
25-ft. overhead walking lunge
8 chest-to-bar pull-ups

Men lunge 95 lb.
Women lunge 65 lb.

All details here.

This workout revealed, wether you have done your cardio homework or not. I quote Jami from „The Training Plan“: „Suckfest“.

With the lunges also a new movement has been introduced.

RankingCFBS

Ouch, page 2 on the leaderboard. We do not like this. But this is the reality. Team CrossFit Basel currently ranked 69. Part of this reality:

europeiscoming

27’000 entries in Europe. Almost 300’000 athletes put in a score for 16.1. CrossFit as a sport is getting bigger and bigger and also much more competitive. Whereas last year 390 teams battled for the 20 spots allowing them to compete at the Meridian Regionals, this year a whopping number of close to 480 teams registered (2014: 360). This shows the immense and accelerated growth in competitive CrossFit.

In some regions our score would be good enough for Top 20. In other regions Top 50. In EVERY other region we would rank higher than our current standing. This puts our efforts in perspective (but doesn’t help at all).

Other Teams struggle as well. CF Turicum, participating at the Games last year are currently sitting on rank 20 in a workout which is normally in their realm (high rep, bodyweight/low weight, cardio). Other new teams perform strong. Teams form, teams are built. Teams are built with ambition.

Strength in Depth 2015

Last year, our Competition Team travelled to England for the first time to absolve the biggest international team competition – next to the Regionals – Strength in Depth. The team must be composed of seven male athletes and five females, both genders with one athlete over the age of 40.

It is by far not a matter of course that a box manages to send twice in a row such a large team of capable athletes to an international competition. Finishing the competition this and last year in the Top Ten (4th and 5th) out of 50+ teams in Europe adds the fact, that CrossFit Basel not only has a few good athletes but numerous ones throughout all ages that are in great shape.

This year’s representatives were:
Alessia Wälchli
Jessica Preiss
Romina Wicki
Katrin Luethy
Nicole Reichmuth (Master)
Tom Schwander
Sascha Albini (Master)
Lukas Büel
Ramon Gysin
Fabian Tresch
Basil Bard
Joel Wächter

11223481_10208121418581017_8827489542351129906_n

The competition had eleven events ready for the team to tackle. As we know them, Event 1 was their favorite – Max Olympic Lifting Clean&Jerk. And heavy lifts they did: Ramon 145kg, Tom 140kg, Joel 140kg, Alessia 80kg, Romina 80kg, Katrin 75kg. Unfortunately due to rules regarding the floor protection (bar is not allowed to leave the platform) – most of the lifts on the ladies site didn’t get a score and so instead of rank 4, the fell back to place 22. Not a reason to throw in the towel…..

12289732_1042728812417337_4180662999006612635_n

……..because they owned Event 1B with a second place finish:

3 male and 3 female athletes:
In 3 minutes: Max handstand hold
In 3 minutes: Max chin over bar hold

They came in second with amazing work by Lukas who held his chin above the bar for more than 90 seconds, while Alessia kept standing on her hands for solid 90 seconds. Well done.

Throughout the two days the team finished all the events – except event 6 – in the top ten! Even the swimming challenge was mastered successfully by Lukas, Fabian, Sascha, Basil, Alessia and Jessica – Jessica Frogpreiss who outpaced the guys with the kick-board was a great highlight.

Bildschirmfoto 2015-12-01 um 13.28.23

Other supreme action during the comp:

– Alessia Wälchli outruns Sam Briggs on the 400m sprint
– Lukas Büel rocks 15 unbroken Bar Muscle Ups while Tom Schwander shows how to smash 30 Chest to bar pull ups unbroken after 12 unbroken thrusters with 75kg.
– Fabian Tresch slaps out 220 Unbroken Double Unders in the final event
– In the same event, Basil Bard climbs legless instead of doing ordinary rope climbs, God knows why – anyway, in the end he was faster! PLUS, Ramon Geissenkopf power snatches 3x 100kg.

IMG_1010 IMG_1022

IMG_1013

Bildschirmfoto 2015-12-02 um 13.48.25

Officially they ended the competition on place 6. Technically though, they had place 5 – Team Reebok performed as a Promo Team and therefore had no scores in the final event and may be neglected in the leaderboard.

Two big competition weekends in one month – that is an enormous accomplishment and a tough strain for those bodies. To still perform on such a high level and being consistent with a strong performance proves once more that smart and continuous training pays off.

Congratulations to the Team CrossFit Basel!

If you want to see the detailed WOD’s, all results, videos and pictures you can find them on the website and the Facebook page of SiD.

Relentless Jeans Europe – Are You Tough Enough 2015

(German Version below)

Founded in 2012, first time executed on 150 square meters in the first few years of CrossFit Basel.

Final

AYTE 2014 followed after AYTE 2013 and this year, 2015,  we topped it all with a maximum number of competitors and the final day at the Fitness Expo in the big hall. We had 26 female and 35 male topathletes who travelled to Basel from around the world – coming from Spain, Italy, Iceland, France, Germany and Switzerland to compete alongside each other. The competition was sponsored by Relentless Jeans Europe – thank you so much for equipping our people with the perfect Jeans!

Read on for a recap of an extraordinary weekend.

11168464_1638902059681692_7830080385818626810_n-2 11896148_1666195640285667_7417197783096164837_n

Friday, November 6, 2015 – start of the competition at 6pm. Event 1 was dedicated to maximum weights in Olympic Lifting. The box was packed, space was limited indeed – though this made for a blistering heat and the adrenaline increased like a rocket.

Our Headcoach Tom Schwander won WOD 1A with a Snatch of 122.5kg, followed by our chief Ramon Gysin with 117.5kg! What a start. No surprise that our Junior athlete Nora Jäggi won WOD 1A with a Snatch of 75kg. More success in WOD 1B where Ramon took over the lead together with Yohann Gigord with 142.5kg Clean&Jerk, followed by Tom and multiple athletes with 137.5kg while Nora ranked again 1st together with four other female athletes with a Clean&Jerk of 90kg.

Not only our CrossFit Basel cracks did amazing, it was a tight fight against the other competitors, for example Julian Reinhold from CrossFit myLeo in Berlin, Germany who snatched  110kg and made a Clean&Jerk of 137.5kg as seen in the video.

_DSC1175

Event 2 started at 8:15 and challenged the athletes‘ Skills. Build up as the ‚Boulevard of Skills‘, 2 athletes at a time had to enter and absolve station after station, followed by the next couple. It was a pleasure to watch and pure entertainment. Learning: Never underestimate a target jump.

Reebok CrossFit Games Team Athletes from CrossFit Turicum started their way to the top of the Leaderboard at this event – Lindsay Hurte’s Handstand Hold was given a round of applause and shouts of joy while #hobbit Jonas Müller climbed the double ropes as quick as a monkey. Nonetheless, CrossFit Basel was close on their heels with a brilliant performance by Katrin Luethy on place 2 and Nora on place 5.

Day 1 ended by 10pm which let the athletes get to bed in a reasonable time to be well recovered for more madness to come.

_DSC1345

——————————————-

Saturday morning, 10:30 – the starting shot of ‚Papperlappap‘ – Event 3 was released. Four WOD packages had to be absolved to get to the very end of the Event. If one of the WOD’s couldn’t be finished in three minutes, the athlete dropped out. Lindsay Hurte, Ann-Katrin Weber and Manila Pennaccio were some of the few girls who made it to the Deadlifts and Burpee Box Jumps. Tricky detail? The Deadlifts had to be lifted with an  Axle Bar. Ramon as the strongest man of Switzerland since 2012, is famous of including Strongman elements in his programming. Fun times.

3

_DSC1670 DSC_9694 DSC_9731

Henry Kulla from CrossFit Zurich and again Jonas Müller from CrossFit Turicum shared the first spot in this event, closely followed by the Iceland machine, Arnar Sigurdsson from CrossFit Valens and Yohann Gigord from CrossFit Galileo.

After a short break, ‚In and Out‘ – Event 4 went off. Seven minutes AMRAP seems like a piece of cake – except it is not and the cake in CrossFit is always spicy to eat. The striking flavor here were the typical AYTE heavy weights. Ground to Overhead with 110kg for the guys and 70kg for the girls was borderline for quite a few of the competitors and brought out the first tears, screams and curses.

The Leaderboard got almost little boring by Jonas leading this Event, followed by Arnar, followed by Yohann. Lindsay as well on rank one, followed by Manila, followed by our Nora who cleaned and pushed the 70kilos like it was some kind of fun. Frustration for our power ant Jessica Preiss who made successful lifts in the Warm-Up, but then got stuck with the weight during the workout and could not finish one round – despite being a boss at rope climbs and deficit Handstand Push-Ups. Considering that 70kg are almost 20 Kilos above her bodyweight, she fought like a champ and can be extremely proud of herself for being a real tough lady.

4

_DSC9785 _DSC9832 _DSC0023 _DSC9964

Event 5 was kind of a surprise – the athletes knew they have to go outdoors, but they did not know what and how. Always be prepared for the unknown, right – naming the Event ‚Cry Baby‘ didn’t make it any better to be shit scared of what was about to come up, letting alone the though that it started to turn into a pitchblack and fresh night outside.

It was a narrow and steep trailrun of 2.5km with a Kettlebell. 24kg for the males, 16kg for the females. They had to wear beautiful luminous vests, headlamps and runner’s gear. A nice fire was waiting for everyone who came up and the whole bunch of people got transported back to the gym safely, where Dino served his delicious warm pumpkin soup and sausages. The atmosphere after the run at the gym showed the amazing community of CrossFit – it almost felt like in a cosy living room with everyone having a nice meal, chatting along, laughing and being content.

Speaking of Jessica – this event was for her and she was hard on Ann-Katrin Weber’s heels who came in first with a time of 21:31. Jessica scored 22:40. Henry Kulla from CrossFit Zurich made it with a time of 19:11 but could not beat Janis Arts from CrossFit Mallorca who left the males behind and came in as the first with an impressive time of 18:38!

After the briefing for Sunday, the athletes went back to rest, while the #TeamAYTE made their way to the big hall to build up the playground for Sunday. Every support was needed and by 2am, we were ready.

———————————————————————–

Some of the Team spent the night at the box to save up some precious sleeping minutes and Sunday everyone was ready to tackle the last day – the hall filled up with spectators in no time – to watch the athletes perform on the huge rig was simply amazing. Event 6 was the Killer. It lived up to its name ‚Suck my Ballz‘ and sucked in the best way possible. Again some Strongman flavor with heavy Atlas Stones, plus several double Kettlebell movements – double Kettlebell Snatch as the one to draw out the best pain faces.

6

_DSC0416 _DSC0382 DSC_0090

This was the last event before the final and everyone was waiting greedily for the scoring to be finished – some sat in the cleavage as to be excited for a final spot or to be happy about finishing the comp after Event 6. The WOD was not released until shortly before the Event started  – when Euan Robertson, our Headjudge opened up the last battle for the finalists.

7

Finalists were:

12 top females: Manila Pennacchio, Lindsay Hurte, Ann-Katrin Weber, Lisa Lettner, Stephanie Haspel, Nora Jäggi, Elise Labrunie, Sarah Mentzen, Lena Prucher, Katrin Luethy, Vivi Viktorova, Renata Molliet, Anna-Carina Häusler, Emely Camara, Stephanie Haspel

18 top males: Jonas Müller, Henry Kulla, Rob Martin, Ramon Gysin, Markus Schmidt, Arnar Sigurdsson, Julian Reinhold, Christoph Büeler, Felix Egli, Yohann Gigord, Adrian Stetter, Tom Schwander, Manuel Strub, Bertrand Saugy, Goran Stefanovski, Dennis Hildebrandt, Joel Wächter, Gregory Hung

The atmosphere in the hall was about to explode. The cheering audience, the blasting beats, the sweating and screaming athletes – it was huge. Speaker Jasmin Mulic continued to moderate tireless, entertaining the spectators and motivating the athletes. Once again the CrossFit spirit made a clear appearance when some of the finalists were done with their workout and went to cheer on their rivals to help them making it to the finish line in the given time cap.

And then it was over.

CrossFit Basel is very proud to have seen five out of twelve athletes in the final and three in the top TEN! Nora Jäggi rocked the competition and came in fifth, Katrin Luethy showed just as well a remarkable performance throughout the whole weekend and ranked sixth, plus on the men side, Headcoach Tom made it on place ten. Watch out for us next year – we will be training more, harder and will be back stronger!

Find the full Ranking here.

The Weekend was all sorts of amazing, epic, wicked and simply a blast. It is impressive to see how much the competitors grow mentally and physically and become better athletes year by year. It is also wonderful to watch the community sticking together – if these are the competitors, the coaches, the volunteers, the judges, the organisators – everyone is part of it and a supporter. This year we made it bigger than ever and performed in front of a huge audience – and so we hope we could show what CrossFit is all about and inspire many more out there to become a part of the fit crowd.

Ramon Gysin about this year’s Relentless Jeans Europe – Are You Tough Enough 2015:

‚What an epic Weekend that was.
It is moments like this – many small things come together to one big piece. It is not possible whatsoever to organize such an event on its own. In essence, I distinctly see: THIS was community. So many volunteers from our box but also from other gyms plus countless hours of work made this event happen like it did.

Community, Culture and Spirit. Those things can not be consumed, they can only be lived. Thank you so much to everyone involved in making this weekend possible. I am still overwhelmed by joy and pride. This is exactly what I love about being a business owner and an event organizer. Creating things and not just talking about them. And so did all the volunteers and athletes at this years Are You Tough Enough 2015.

As a business owner, you operate tightly in the free market – you have to bring results. And simultaneously, it is the same procedure with a sports competition: No excuses. You got the choice – either you do it, or you don’t. Either you quit, or you succeed. Either you stop, or you move on.

Clearly, there is only one direction for me. I have a vision – up and onwards.
Cross your limits and challenge yourself, make experiences, learn from them and grow. Live life, cause this is real life.

Events like this are so much more than a competition or a product. They are a milestone in community and they are the perfect proof that anything is possible you put your mind to. Whether this is as an athlete or as an organizer – if you live for it, you can make it happen.‘

Final

Freude herrscht.

Henry Kulla von Reebok CrossFit Zurich und einmal mehr Jonas Müller von CrossFit Turicum teilten den ersten Platz in diesem Event, gefolgt von der Maschine aus Island, Arnar Sigurdsson von CrossFit Valens und Yohann Gigord von CrossFit Galileo.

Eine kurze Pause wurde gewährt, bevor ‚In and Out‘, Event 4 losging.

Ramon Gysin über die diesjährige Relentless Jeans Europe – Are You Tough Enough 2015:

12219382_10153693843563427_3963394607889615933_n

Community, Culture and Spirit.
