Words from Head Coach Ramon Gysin:

„We spent a great time in Boston seeing old friends and making new ones. I love competing in the WDFPF because the atmosphere is very friendly.

It is two days of lifting and everybody, Teenagers, Seniors and Masters, men and women, competes together on the same platform. Athletes are cheering for each other, helping each other out. Our federation is very inclusive and the community is strong.

The anti doping rules are the most strict in the world. Cheaters get banned for life. They are not allowed to come back, unlike other sports or federations. Hence it’s the drug free federation, not only drug tested. Nevertheless, last year, 10 people have been caught using illegal substances.

Being abroad is always a great opportunity to see other CrossFit Boxes.

Powerlifting is a very safe sport. We rarely have injuries happening at our competitions.

The benefits of strength training are well documented and established. It’s not unusual to have athletes competing into their 80s in our federation. You build muscle which supports your skeleton. Strength training is the practical application of basic physics. You learn to control external objects, being aware of optimal body and object position.

Powerlifting is a very healthy sport. More people should lift. In fact, people working an office job should lift. Most people don’t think about it, but you move into a nursing home once you are not strong enough anymore to fulfill everyday activities. The longer you are strong, the longer you will be independent.

Consistency, listening to your body, patience. Respecting the process will make you strong. Being strong (and fit in general) gives you more opportunities in life.

Start easy, only 2h of training a week can lead to great results already! Try a Powerlifting or CrossFit class at our box.

Finding time to calm down before a competition is crucial. The Boston area is beautiful!

What is Powerlifting?

The next event for our team is the Swiss Powerlifting Championship (date and location to be announced).

There are raw competitions where only a belt is allowed and there are equipped competitions (single ply => one layer of suits/equipment and multi ply => several layers of equipment) where athletes wear assistant suits, briefs and knee wraps to be able to lift much more weight.

Team CrossFit Basel is competing raw.

What is the WDFPF?

The World Drug Free Powerlifting Federation was established to give drug free lifters a home as in most strength sports there is no or little drug testing. In fact there is no other sports federation (including ALL olympic sports!) in the world today that knows such severe punishment like the WDFPF. If an athlete is tested positive he or she will be banned FOR LIFE and all past results will be erased.

The WDFPF is also an inclusive federation, all athletes, no matter what age, are competing at the same venue at the same competition together, ranked in their respective weight and age classes.

1:1, Face to Face – Personal Training at CrossFit Basel – Stories of Success

(English Version below)

Warum CrossFit, was bedeutet CrossFit für Dich?

————————————————————————————————————————————

Besides the big variety of classes, CrossFit Basel offers Personal Training to its clients. Our members get the opportunity to have 1:1 sessions with one of our coaches in order to get an individual, customized training. The bonus with this option is that you will profit from undivided attention from your coach as well as the programming which is designed specifically to your needs.

Two of our CrossFit Basel athletes and members, Mike and Gaynor were so kind to give us a look into their experience with Personal Training at CrossFit Basel.

_MG_0533_001

_MG_0478_005

Why CrossFit, what does CrossFit mean to you?

Mike: CrossFit built me up physically and mentally over the last few months. The Training here and the work with the coaches motivated me to not only work on my fitness, but also on other aspects in my lifestyle outside of the box. CrossFit is more than just training for me. The challenge of the strength and endurance training is a whole new experience for me. To see results like this is a more intense and personal experience for me as I had in any training program ever before.

Gaynor: I came through an old friend, Lucie, who works and trains at CrossFit Basel. I saw her change in her body and strength and told myself: ‚ I want that too!‘ I didn’t totally understand what CrossFit actually was, but after one session I was hooked. I also joined cause while following Lucie’s work on Facebook with all the pics and videos, I felt like there is a great spirit where no matter what your ability is, you can fit in. I also LOVE that they do a 50+ class called ‚Masters‘, I joined immediately and have made some new friends including the owner’s Mom who is very inspiring.

Why did you chose to do Personal Training?

Mike:  After a long permanent treatment at the hospital plus a rough life crisis I had to go through, my body condition was really bad. I was overweight and my fitness was on the lowest level ever. Even to manage to walk to the gym I had to gather all my self-esteem and force myself to go. My training consisted of machines only – no cardio, no free weights no skils.

I came through a friend who trains at CrossFit Basel. Even though I was very skeptical in the beginning, after the first session I was convinced of the method. The worst sore muscles in my life showed me that my training so far was a waste of time. The simplicity of the movements, the dynamic and the fitness level of the athletes of CrossFit Basel is an enormous motivation and inspiration. Though I realized that I need to build up my fitness from naught. That’s why I chose Personal Training to practise CrossFit 1:1. Not only that, I also wanted to tackle some other lifestyle projects besides training so it made most sense to go for Personal Training. My goal is to take part in the group classes in the near future.

Gaynor: I have the goal to get toned and in shape and I knew that running my rounds along the Rhine would not get me the results I wished for. I was to go to Brazil soon for a vacation and I wanted to be in my best shape and build that strength. So I was looking to hire a Personal Trainer which turned out to be Tom. I can highly recommend Tom, not only is his English perfect, but only after a few 1:1 sessions I could see significant progress and results. Personal Training is the one luxury I allow myself and this is a worthwile investment.

_MG_0515_001 _MG_0493_005

What are the benefits for you with Personal Training?

Mike: I came to CrossFit Basel in order to start a new fitness program. The CrossFit method convinced me. I would have never expected CrossFit to have such an extremely positive influence on my life. So many things in connection with my lifestyle changed for the good since I started training in this box. The most important thing for me is the impact on my physical and mental condition in my daily life. The strength, the stability and the improved fitness just makes my life better. The Know How of the coaches, their patience and dedication, paired with the team spirit are the most important aspects to stay determined and dedicated with training. To experience success in such kind and way is what keeps me going.

Gaynor: With a Personal Trainer I can work better on my technique. There were certain movements and exercises I could not master  but after a few sessions I am now able to do them a lot better and actually feel comfortable with it. I also thought that a ‚Double Under‘ was just a high jump using the skipping rope, but Tom corrected me and I was able to do 5 immediately one after another. Another aspect of hiring a Personal Trainer is that at CrossFit Basel you are able to share the costs with a partner which I did one day with a complete stranger and it was awesome. I love the after effect of a personal training session as you really feel the impact almost immediately. I am a long way off my perfect body and full strength but so many in here are in the same boat and we keep motivating each other, that’s why we go, yes? I think I will be a life long member for sure.

Personal Training at CrossFit Basel: If you are interested to improve your skills and strength in 1:1 sessions then talk to your coaches before or after class or write an email to web@crossfitbasel.ch. You don’t need to be a CrossFit Basel member in order to hire one of our trainers. We offer Personal Trainings also to Non-Members. We recommend at least one private training a week if you also join the group classes. For Personal Training only clients we recommend 2-3 sessions a week.

Thank you so much Mike and Gaynor for your contribution!

The Training Plan – the conception, our contribution

Back in our post about the year in review 2014, we mentioned Ramon’s contribution and support of a concept called The Training Plan. Now that he spent a weekend in Manchester at the Athlete Games, working as a coach and supporting TTP’s owner, Jami Tikkanen’s work with the athletes, we would like to introduce you to the idea behind the Training Plan.

Courtney Walker (CF San Francisco), John Singleton (CF Mallorca), Ramon Gysin (CF Basel), Jami Tikkanen (TTP), Frankie Newall (TTP)

The Training Plan is a movement based SPP (Specific Physical Preparedness) template designed for CrossFit athletes. The goal is to help them achieve their full potential in Sport and Fitness. Whether the goal is to compete at a local level or to stand on the podium at the CrossFit Games –  The Training Plan’s commitment is to provide a Plan that will get the athletes there. The foundation of the plan is built around movement patterns regardless of the type or duration of the challenge the athlete is facing. Investment in good mechanics won’t only allow an athlete to fully express the physical potential on the Game day but also to have a long and healthy career.

Several components are involved in the concept of The Training Plan:

Movement-based Programming

Skill development

Energy systems development

Ability to produce and sustain high power outputs both aerobically and anaerobically

Strength development

Various methods of training ranging from strength aerobic to maximal effort to address all the components of strength

Mobility work

Working on a sufficient range of motion and making mobility part of the daily practise

Weightlifting

Emphasis lays on good form based on solid practise for Snatch and Clean & Jerk

Gymnastics

Building the required strength, developing the skill to carry this strength and then applying it to specific techniques

Restoration

Programming specific restoration to support the training across the season to ensure best performance every day

Nutrition

Recommendations for a sound foundation of nutrition and hydration which can be adapted to individual requirements

As for Ramon’s role in the Training Plan:

Jami’s concept is followed by quite the impressing list of athletes such as Annie Thorisdottir, Frederik Aegidius, Björgvin Karl Gudmundsson, Simon Mäntylä and Lukas Högberg. All athletes receive programming and guidance from a fine coaching team which includes Jami Tikkanen himself, Chad Vaughn, Ramon Gysin (CF Basel), Darren Ellis (CF New Zealand) and Nate Helming (SFCF, Helming Athletics).

Ramon supports Jami in programming for individual athletes and for TTP in general, particularly in the area of strength. Via phone Ramon and Jami hold weekly meetings to discuss thetrainingplan.co plus the athletes (such as Annie Thorisdottir, Frederik Aegidius) programming.
