RESULTS SWISS TEAM CHALLENGE 2017 @ CrossFit Basel

-DE- English below-

#STCH2017 #Teamup #evenbigger

20170624_STC_Part2_521

Minütlich unterbrochen von 4 Synchronized Burpee over Box Jumps.

20170624_STC_Part2_253

Während ein Athlet („switch as you want“) permanent ruderte, musste vom restlichen Team folgendes Brett absolviert werden:

SWISS TEAM CHALLENGE 2017

#STCH2017 #Teamup #evenbigger

This year’s mottos were met on a grand scale!

This year’s competition represents the eighth manifestation of the Swiss Team CHallenge event. After last year’s 440 registered Teams, this year exceeded with a total of 499, meaning nearly 2000 CrossFit Athletes nationwide!

Our home box CrossFit Basel participated with 12 Firebreather and 30 Regular Teams. This year we were once again happy to welcome external teams to our box and send our salutes to Reebok CrossFit Augsburg, CrossFit Ansbach, CrossFit Öuf, KSC Solothurn and CrossFit Lörrach! It was a pleasure having you with us on this special occasion!

The day was sure to bring up the heat – literally! At 8 am registration welcomed athletes and the first coffees were already being distributed at the bar. Nane Sele was heating up the oven for the hungry crowds and at 9 am the organization committee was able to welcome participants and spectators. The excitement for the first event starting at 10 am began to rise…

Event 1 / WOD 1 & 2 was a good start for a Team-Competition. Internal agreement and collaboration was crucial. Two couples of pull-up variations with thrusters and toes to bar / knee raises with power cleans had to be split up and completed. Every minute the flow was interrupted by 4 synchronized burpee box jumps over. After this workout everyone was assured to be warmed up sufficiently and had definitely entered into competition-mood!

Event 2 was composed of 5 parts. WOD 3 was a 3RM Thruster – this required a solid self-assessment as well as a tactical sizing of ones’ strength. The highest mean of the entire team won. “Norbert & the Girls” dominated this WOD: Nora, Benjamin, Basil and Manu managed 80, 85 and 90kg, respectively! For the subsequent four parts of the event (WOD 4,5,6&7) each team member chose a skill. The following potpourri of movements were to be allocated: max. reps Ring Muscle-Ups (Firebreathers)/ max reps toes to rings (Regular), max L-sit hold, max reps Pistols / Wall Ball shots and max reps Double Unders. Tiziano (Team Buns&Guns) completed a total of 165 DU in the provided 90 seconds!

This event was an opportunity for everyone to give and show their best!

Before Event 3 / WOD 8 & 9 took place, the results of the previous workouts were utilized to establish the final heat list. This open time slot provided an opportunity to relax in the sun or refuel tired bodies with a cool shake from our bar. We take this occasion to send a big thank you to all our helpers, volunteers and judges! By this time already your performance was invaluable!

A grand finale was promised. Basically the entire box equipment was arranged on the floor for the final event. The competition floor was flooded and the atmosphere tense – this was an opportunity to collect valuable points. The spectators’ zone began to fill up… and at 5.30 pm the final heat started with a final effort.

A 24-minute Time Cap was set. The most amount of calories was to be collected on the rowing ergometer (WOD 9). While one athlete was continuously rowing (“switch as you want”), the other three of the team were to complete the following Mount Everest:

The cheering, screaming and music was shattering. The atmosphere had the literal impact of a bomb, and the aftermath was apparent. Great, great stuff. Every single athlete was exhausted but content when the final heat was done around 8 pm.

And here our final CrossFit Basel ranking:

STC2017CFBS_Scoreboard_Intern_REG

Regulars:

1. Platz – Mittagstisch (CrossFit Basel)

2. Patz – Mamazita feat. Triple M (CrossFit Basel)

3. Platz – Bumpers & Beer (CrossFit Öuf)

Firebreathers:

1. Platz – Pneu Egger (CrossFit Basel)

2. Platz – Norbert & the Girls (CrossFit Basel)

3. Platz – Alice im Bizepsland (CrossFit Basel)

We are incredibly proud of you guys! We hope you are too! It was amazing to experience your joint motivation and the way in which sport manages to connect and bring us together. Stay at it and keep having fun. We can’t wait to find out what else we will achieve together.

We are not able to state it enough: a huge THANK YOU to the organization committee and the Teams from CrossFit Basel and CrossFit Leman as well as every single helper, for your planned or spontaneous commitment. It is hugely appreciated. Our thank you goes out to Jaz, for your impeccable entertainment, to our sponsors Canyon, foodspring and Chiefs (Thank you Melsa!). To Nane Sele and Döne for the catering and the girls and dudes at the bar. Last but not least, our thanks go out to the strong teams and the fantastic spectators!

We will like to conclude with a couple of personal words from Ramon:

“For me, the Swiss Team CHallenge is my favorite day in our event-calendar. Pure CrossFit. We fight through a couple of WODs together, suffer, sweat, but also eat, laugh, drink, party and conclude it all to some good old Eurodance.

I wish to thank all the athletes for their extraordinary dedication and hope that my WODs provided you with enjoyment and a challenge.

Community is a crucial aspect in CrossFit and the ones who are actively engaged by taking time to help out are the ones who stick out from the crowd. They are the ones who form Community. Events on this scale require a couple dozen, usually voluntary, helpers. Invaluable gratitude is due to all helpers, your work indispensable!”

To conclude the eventful day, the grill was heated up, the first cooled beer cans were raised and the box prepared for the award ceremony.

Reebok CrossFit Games Open 2017 – let’s do it again!

The Reebok CrossFit Games season 2017 begins with the worldwide CROSSFIT GAMES OPEN – on February 23 2017!! Our ambition is to qualify again for the CrossFit Regionals Europe where we were part of since 2011-2014 and just missed it by 2 points in 2015 – challenge accepted!!

What are the CrossFit Games?

Anyone can sign up to compete in five workouts over five weeks and post their scores online. There are several categories including a scaled one.

Last year, the Open reached more than 320’000 athletes from around the world. The next stage of the CrossFit Games season are the CrossFit Regionals. Competitors need to finish near the top of their region’s Leaderboard. The top five men, five women and five teams at the end of each three-day regional competition will receive invitations to the CrossFit Games in the US, where the fittest person on Earth will be crowned.

Whether you are a beginner, an advanced athlete, junior or master – the CrossFit Games Open are accessible for anyone. There is already a whole slew of athletes from CrossFit Basel who are currently prepping for the competition. Join them and let’s compete side by side!!

We’ve had people get their first pull-ups, first toes to bar, first muscle up, set a PR on a clean and jerk, and on and on and on, all during the Open, because of the atmosphere and the community. It’s hard to put into words. Kind of like when your friends say “So tell me what this CrossFit stuff is all about.”

On February 23, 2017 at 5pm PST (Fridaynight 1am for us) the first Open Workout will be released. Athletes have four days – until Mondaynight 1am – to absolve the workout. Judges will score the performance and you will have to submit your results to the Games site online. A new workout will be released every Thursdaynight within these five weeks (end of Open Games: March 27th, 2017). A scaled option of the Open workout will be released each week of the Open too. With reduced loading or less challenging movements, the scaled option will be designed to make the Open even more accessible.

Basil doing 16.2

Basil doing 16.2

Let’s DO THIS!!

Because it was so much fun last year, we will again organise a so called „Intramural Open“-Event:

All of CrossFit Basel’s registered athletes will be divided in four teams. Every Team has a Captain. Our best athletes will be spread amongst those 4 teams in a draft (tbd).

CrossFit Basel Downtown will also have a team.

This years Captains are: Tiziano Nardella, Döne Bonina, Nicole Reichmuth and Daniel Hoffmann. CFBS DT will be lead by Lorenz Kuske.

Starting tonight, it is up to YOU: Go, sign up!!

Each team will come up with their own team name, colors, all that fun stuff! Want to make shirts – go for it! Noisemakers – go for it! The goal is to have as much fun as humanly possible while challenging yourself to be better than yesterday.

Talk to one of the Captains if you want to compete in their team, we will hang out registration sheets at the box starting next Tuesday!

Now, because we’re creating teams that will compete against one another, we’ve got to have a scoring system, right? To promote fun and encourage everyone to participate, here are how you can help your team score points:

1 point for showing up and posting a score online (no matter what category you compete).
5 points if all teammates earn an official score on the workout.
1-3 points per athlete that finishes in the top three in the box (male/female, 1st 3 points, 2nd 2 points, 3rd 1 point).
5 points for the team with the best spirit.
8 points (team) – Team Bonding: If your team gets together socially outside of the gym (ALL of you – pic posted on our FB page as proof)…you get points. This is a one time bonus, you can do it as many times as you like but it will only earn you points once. It can be done at any point during the 5 weeks.

After the final Open workout on Saturday March 25th, we’re going to host a big BBQ at the box and present awards. Details will be announced soon.

CrossFit Basel offers Workout Times at the box. These are as follows:

  • Friday, 8pm – 11pm
  • Saturday, 2:30pm – 6:30pm
  • Sunday, 4:30pm – 6pm
  • Monday, 2:30pm – 4:30pm (exclusively reserved for Competition-Athletes) / 8:30pm – 10pm

EACH FRIDAY AND SATURDAY THE NEW LOUNGE WILL BE OPEN!

We strongly recommend doing the workout Friday or Saturday.

Please be aware of workout time changes. Stay tuned on our Facebook page or ask the coaches!

We genuinely want to encourage all of you to register for this competition. Not only will it be challenging and a ton of fun to compete within the community, but it is the perfect chance to gather competition experience and to figure out your current position with your performance and strength in CrossFit.

15663676028_fff6d44525_kBecome a Judge!!

In order to keep up with the international standards, all workouts must be scored by certified judges. Anyone who is interested is allowed or better asked to take this course and become a judge! You can simply take the course of six modules here. This course includes general information on competition rules, regulations and common movements.

CrossFit Basel at the CrossFit Games Regionals Europe since 2011!

Let’s take a quick review on CrossFit Basel’s performances at the CrossFit Games Open/Regionals:

The first time we sent athletes to the CrossFit Games Regionals Europe was back in 2011. Former Coach Claudia competed in the category Women Individuals and placed 18th. Read the article from back in the days here!

We did not miss out on the Regionals in 2012 and competed as a team and individual. The team placed 18th and Ramon Gysin who competed as Individual won Event 5, the ‚Snatch Ladder‘. He made it to the final and finished strong with a 15th place out of 60 athletes!

Also, see the teams in action!

Find the whole report about 2012:

REEBOK CROSSFIT GAMES REGIONALS EUROPE: Team CrossFit Basel in Kopenhagen

2013: Tom Schwander (ranked 47) and Nadine Steinger (ranked 33) entered the Regionals as Individuals, plus we sent two teams!

This time the teams finished with a strong 19th and 23rd place.

CrossFit Regionals Europe 2013

2014: A team of our best athletes travelled to Copenhagen to take the challenge of the CrossFit Games Regionals Europe. This time they came in 15th!!

We are certainly proud of our qualifications 4 times in a row and will give our best to be part of the Regional Games in Madrid this year as well. Also important to point out is that the teams of athletes varied from year to year. Overall, we sent TWENTY different athletes to the Reebok CrossFit Games Regionals Europe during these four years. This shows that we follow a concept and strategy that works. Considering that the qualifications get tougher each year, we can be proud to be well in the loop with the fittest people on Earth.

Workout 16.2

Beginning on a 4-minute clock, complete as many reps as possible of:
25 toes-to-bars
50 double-unders
15 squat cleans, 135 / 85 lb.

If completed before 4 minutes, add 4 minutes to the clock and proceed to:
25 toes-to-bars
50 double-unders
13 squat cleans, 185 / 115 lb.

If completed before 8 minutes, add 4 minutes to the clock and proceed to:
25 toes-to-bars
50 double-unders
11 squat cleans, 225 / 145 lb.

If completed before 12 minutes, add 4 minutes to the clock and proceed to:
25 toes-to-bars
50 double-unders
9 squat cleans, 275 / 175 lb.

If completed before 16 minutes, add 4 minutes to the clock and proceed to:
25 toes-to-bars
50 double-unders
7 squat cleans, 315 / 205 lb.

Stop at 20 minutes.

All details here.

Headcoach Ramon Gysin sums up the numbers, what, why and how of Open WOD 16.2:

Yes, Toes to bars (many), Double Unders and Squat Cleans. Aaaaand a flow, that looks familiar:

12186744_1681948245377073_5298372659650921924_o

This workout was about pacing your ability in either one of the movements, mainly Toes to bars and Squat Cleans. Find the optimal pace for the Toes to Bar or the Squat Cleans. Get through the Double Unders quick. Try to survive one challenging round and give it your all in the last four minutes. Ending far in the Squat cleans in your final round, that hurt. But so it is.

From my own perspective it was a very painful workout, heck, I did it twice. Stupid me.

Some seemed to agree:

Headcoach Ramon Gysin sums up the numbers, what, why and how of Open WOD 16.1:

One year ago I wrote:

„First week down. The box is literally vibrating. Five weeks in which everyone is nervous and the air is full of tension.

I love the opens and I hate it as well. I love it, because people seem to be more alive. They want to achieve something – they have goals they want to reach, they compete against each other. I love to see their smiles if they did much better than expected.

I also love to see their fear cause I know this experience will teach them a lesson in life as well.

I hate it (sarcasm right there ;)) because it is extremely time consuming and it’s hardly possible to get any other work done during these five weeks. Our team invests plenty of extra time and effort to make this happen for you!“

Well, this did not really change! It’s one of my favourite times of the year, people are alive, they share there success, they suffer together, workout together, have fun together!

104 athletes registered for our two boxes!

Thursdaynight, February 25th 2016, the first WOD of the CrossFit Games Open was released. We were all eagerly waiting to see what they came up with this time. Here’s what we got:

Workout 16.1

Complete as many rounds and reps as possible in 20 minutes of:
25-ft. overhead walking lunge
8 burpees
25-ft. overhead walking lunge
8 chest-to-bar pull-ups

Men lunge 95 lb.
Women lunge 65 lb.

All details here.

This workout revealed, wether you have done your cardio homework or not. I quote Jami from „The Training Plan“: „Suckfest“.

With the lunges also a new movement has been introduced.

Rankings so far in Region Europe:

RankingCFBS

Ouch, page 2 on the leaderboard. We do not like this. But this is the reality. Team CrossFit Basel currently ranked 69. Part of this reality:

europeiscoming

27’000 entries in Europe. Almost 300’000 athletes put in a score for 16.1. CrossFit as a sport is getting bigger and bigger and also much more competitive. Whereas last year 390 teams battled for the 20 spots allowing them to compete at the Meridian Regionals, this year a whopping number of close to 480 teams registered (2014: 360). This shows the immense and accelerated growth in competitive CrossFit.

In some regions our score would be good enough for Top 20. In other regions Top 50. In EVERY other region we would rank higher than our current standing. This puts our efforts in perspective (but doesn’t help at all).

Other Teams struggle as well. CF Turicum, participating at the Games last year are currently sitting on rank 20 in a workout which is normally in their realm (high rep, bodyweight/low weight, cardio). Other new teams perform strong. Teams form, teams are built. Teams are built with ambition.

2014 – a year in review at CrossFit Basel

Happy New Year to all of you!

Last Tuesday we ended 2014 with the traditional Sylvester WOD and today we look back at what happenings accompanied us during this exciting year. Read on for a review of a turbulent and successful year plus a personal recap from Head Coach and owner of CrossFit Basel, Ramon Gysin.

We planned a set of athletic goals at the beginning of this year and we are happy to say that we absolved amazing performances throughout the whole year. First of all, CrossFit Basel hosted a bunch of events at the box which ended up being very successful and proved that our team and community delivers tons of fun and strong results!!

Dmitry Klokov visited our box for a weightlifting seminar in April 2014 and provided a great and enriching coaching from which everyone who visited could profit a lot.

In April and  June the first and second FSA Strongman Contest was held at CrossFit Basel. Additional to that, 4 of our athletes took the final contest at Burgdorf where our Head Coach Ramon Gysin won 1st place – means he is the strongest man in Switzerland the third time in a row.

We hosted the Swiss Team CHallenge in June. 184 teams in affiliates all over Switzerland entered this contest from which 45 teams were from CrossFit Basel. This competition is the biggest CrossFit Event so far in D/A/CH.

We started off winter season with the 3rd round of the ‚Are You Tough Enough?‘ Challenge, which was another big success. With some of the best CrossFit athletes from Italy, Mallorca, Germany and Switzerland, this event showcased ace performances and kept the audience entertained and in awe.

Another clear demonstration that hard work pays off was shown by our athletes who absolved several competitions this year with epic results. CrossFit Basel sends out athletes to 4 different sportive areas: CrossFit, Olympic Lifting, Powerlifting and Strongman.

With an integrated association, the ‚Gewichtheberverein beider Basel‘, we compete at the Olympic Lifting Ligacompetitions in Switzerland. Aside from that, we are part of the national squad for Olympic Lifting. This year, our athletes broke several Swiss records and we currently hold 18 Swiss records overall. Our youngest athlete Nora Jäggi won 1st place at the Swiss Championship – being now the strongest lady in categories Juniors and Ladies Elite.

International competitions were absolved in teams. A group of our best athletes travelled to Copenhagen in June to perform at the biggest European Team Challenge, the CrossFit Regional Games as a team. They ranked 15 out of 30 teams.

The last CrossFit Team Challenge for 2014 took place in Bath, England where our athletes entered the next biggest CrossFit European International Team Challenge – the Strength in Depth Competition. With an overall amount of points of 251, the team placed a fantastic 4th rank.

All our events and competitions are documented here on the blog and you can find a load of photo albums on our Flickr account here!

Head Coach Ramon Gysin absolved all 4 International Powerlifting competitions this year. The highlight was the new Squat World Record (271kg). At the Powerlifting World Championship in Chisinau, Moldowa coach and athlete Nora Jäggi ended the season with an exceptional performance with 3 new world records and placed 1st.  Ramon himself experienced a great challenge with his competitors and at the end took 2nd place.

Other sportive areas CrossFit Basel covered this year:

– Sponsor of former coach and athlete Chris Navarro’s Swiss Bobsleigh Team

– Support of Radovan Simic who is a successful international athlete at Karateclub Basel

– Training host for Judo athletes of the ‚Regionales Leistungszentrum beider Basel‘

– Hosting trainings/classes at University Basel (University of Basel CrossFit)

Taking part at the fund raising campaign ‚Jeder Rappen zählt‘ by SRF and Glückskette together with Kraftsportclub Solothurn.

Of course, our main focus lays on training. We aim to improve our schedule further and are keen to offer the best possible variety of classes for our members. We had a major increase of numbers of classes this year – our schedule went from 49 classes at the beginning of 2014 up to 75 classes as of now. Besides our ‚All Levels‘, ‚Beginners‘ and ‚WOD‘ CrossFit Classes we offer Powerlifting and Olympic Lifting classes and added 2 more Gymnastics classes (4 in total), created Advanced CrossFit classes – as one level below Competition Class – and recently held an 8 times mobility session with our Physio Lynn.

More classes means we need more space – and here we have our Skillbox. Only about 400m away from the main box, where mostly Olympic Lifting, Powerlifting and Gymnastics take place. But that’s not the only additional box – our biggest project for 2015 is in the works: CrossFit Basel Downtown. Close to Heuwaage, at Byfangweg, a new affiliate of CrossFit Basel opens on February 1st 2015!

Not only our space grows more and more, so does the team. Several of our coaches work in the box by teaching our athletes besides their studies (Jessica Preiss, Alessia Wälchli, Lukas Büel, Pascale Herrmann). Tanja Rüegg took over our accounts department and is responsible for all things membership and payments. Rooven Brucker is – aside from working as a coach – managing our new shop (read more below) and is responsible for its assortment. Plus Lucie Pfaendler became in charge over all things Social Media and PR – Facebook, Blog and documentations of our events and competitions.

Head Coach Ramon Gysin became part of CrossFit Level 1 Staff plus he represents and programs for Jami Tikkanen’s The Training Plan (read more on that below). Tom Schwander, Staff Coach and President of ‚Gewichtheberverein beider Basel‘ is part of Rob Orlando’s Seminarstaff in Europe and provides support at Rob’s Strongman seminars all over Europe.

Last but not least, 2014 was our year of rebranding!! After 5 years, we launched our new logo plus website. This was worthily celebrated at the Swiss Team CHallenge Party back in June! Aside from that, we entered a cooperation with Reebok, which gives us the possibility to sell Reebok CrossFit collections at the shop in our box. Speaking of the shop – another area of CrossFit Basel that grew! A few days ago we announced the entire assortment of our products – now feel free to take a peek in our collection of nutrition supplements, clothes, shoes and other CrossFit accessories.

In the background of all these achievements stands an amazing team with their boss and owner of CrossFit Basel, Ramon Gysin:

‚2014 was our 5 years anniversary for which I had quite a few projects in the pipeline I wanted to put into practice.

  • I wanted to strengthen our focus in direction Mobility and Fitness, so it would motivate all kinds of fitness levels to start and profit from CrossFit. Together with our Physio Lynn we managed to professionalise this area and teach our members how to practise a holistic training approach.
  • Since I started with CrossFit and turned it into my profession, I worked with a concept which is successful – therefore I always wanted to forge an even bigger place for it to develop and grow. After lengthy search I finally found a location to expand my business and we signed the rental agreement for our second box – CrossFit Basel DownTown which we are extremely looking forward to open up.
  • Our new website / homepage: this relaunch plus the rebranding finally made us leaving the Start Up State and we climbed up to the next level.

As for my personal highlights I comitted to be part of CrossFit Level 1 Seminar Staff together with only a few selected trainers in the german speaking area. Additional to that I am part of Jami Tikkanen’s The Training Plan since July 2014, where I took over programming strength for some of the best athletes in Europe like Frederik Aegidius and Annie Thorisdottir.

My athletic achievements were definitely a consistently strong competition season after the recovery of my injured wrist joint. I was very happy with my comeback in the Olympic Lifting plus I battled a suspense-packed Powerlifting World Championship in Chisinau (Moldowa) with great lifters on a high competition level.

10847756_10152400651646846_6461281614501099857_o

In general I must say that my main satisfaction lays in the fact that I work with and lead a concept, which I followed throughout all these years. I am convinced by this method and measured by results and feedbacks from our members I can say that it works and pays off. It is my job which I accomplish with passion and joy and I figure that our athletes profit from my concept. I am astonished everytime anew by the progress and performances I see. (Read my interview with Tageswoche from May 2014 here)

All this wouldn’t be possible without the very much appreciated feedback from the community / our members. We try to provide the best training and service we can and therefore are always thankful for your inputs.

A big thank you goes out to my team and all the external helpers who show daily effort, encouragement and initiative to put my goals into practise and to support me by realising my visions. It is by no means a matter of course to have a back up like this – THANK YOU. ‚

2015 will be another big year for CrossFit Basel and we are eager to conquer more and bigger things! As mentioned, we start off by opening up our second affiliate downtown Basel plus in the same month we will be competing at the Reebok CrossFit Games Open. By planning to be part of the CrossFIt Regional Games once again and hosting the SIXTH Swiss Team CHallenge and the fourth ‚Are You Tough Enough?‘ Challenge, we will keep on growing stronger in representing CrossFit Basel at CrossFit competitions. We aim to maintain and improve our athletic performance and will take it to an even more professional level. Not only the competition area but of course everything which happens inside our box, on the website, classes and infrastructure we are ambitious to improve and adapt continuously for our community.

Stay tuned for all the happenings and shenanigans we tackle this year on our Facebook page plus here on the blog!
