Open Workout 18.5 and RECAP of five weeks of fun and community!

It’s done! Once again.

The CrossFit Games Open: Every year, these five weeks stir up mixed emotions. A cocktail of expectancy, high hopes, impatience and joy mixed with apprehension, respect and maybe a pinch of fear.

The CrossFit Games Open 2018 ended with a Repeater.

Workout 18.5 = 12.5 = 11.6

Complete as many reps as possible in 7 minutes of:
3 thrusters
3 chest-to-bar pull-ups
6 thrusters
6 chest-to-bar pull-ups
9 thrusters
9 chest-to-bar pull-ups
12 thrusters
12 chest-to-bar pull-ups
15 thrusters
15 chest-to-bar pull-ups
18 thrusters
18 chest-to-bar pull-ups

This is a timed workout. If you complete the round of 18, go on to 21. If you complete 21, go on to 24, etc.

Men use 100 lb. / Women use 65 lb.

Looks simple and „easy“ but it was a real mindf**k. A nice grueling finisher after 5 weeks of pure CrossFit. „Constantly varied functional movements executed at high intensity.“

Some people are happy that it’s over. Sleepless thursday-nights before the workout-announcement. The fear for Burpees and Thrusters…sore muscles and painfaces all over the place.

But as tough it was, it was also a great time to grow as a person and as a community. We had 130 CFBS-Athletes who signed up for the Open 2018 and were able to beat last year´s numbers! Great work peeps! The team spirit was awesome and it was beautiful to see how you guys are helping each other out by cheering and offering support. That’s what those times are about. Growing stronger – physically and physiologically as a human.

This year the Open showed the direction how the sport is developing. Weights and skills are getting „heavier“. More people chose the scaled variation. But that’s not a bad thing. It’s just an option to make the experience possible for more people. It is also showing us that almost nothing is impossible and that there’s always a way to improve and „get better than yesterday“.
Many athletes got their first double under, toes to bar, pull-up, chest to bar pull-up or even muscle-ups.

Now some numbers and final performance analysis:

Alessia qualified again for the Meridian Regionals! All your hard and dedicated work pays off girl! You rock!

 This is copied straight from the CrossFit Games Open Rule book:

„The team Leaderboard is unofficial and subject to change until all Individual athletes have completed the video review process and either accepted or rejected their invitation to compete at regionals.“ We will know how the final leaderboard looks after April 16, when the individuals have decided about wether they go team or individual.

The following leaderboard is just provisionally.

Rankings so far in Region Europe South:

We are currently sitting within the 15 qualifying spots in the newly created region „Europe South“. We are curious to see how the leaderboard changes after the removal of 40 Individual athletes. We are honestly not expecting to qualify as after the removal of Alessia’s excellent performances we will most likely drop out of the top 15. But we are confident to be able to build a team for 2019 as we have one year of preparation ahead and many talented athletes at the box.

Keep up the great work folks! The CrossFit Games Open is really one of my favourite times of the year! After the Open is before the Swiss Team CHallenge, just sayin…

We finished the five weeks and the sunny day with a nice „Hello spring“- BBQ and looking forward to the next events with you all! Thank you guys!

Excerpt from this article. Many people got quite emotional about how the Open evolved and ask your for more every year:

„At breakfast, I told Coach Glassman I had visited the old CrossFit HQ, and he jokingly said the place is probably a meth lab now. He showed no sentimentality at all—the mark of a leader who has always been way ahead of the pack. We’re looking forward, son—always.

You shouldn’t be sentimental about CrossFit either. Doing so is literally bad for your health.

This year’s Open competition was next level, and some sentimental people didn’t like that. They longed for the old days, which are long gone, even if 18.5 was a repeat of a test seen in 2011 and 2012.

In some forums, I heard a few people complaining about workouts that were very, very challenging at the Rx level, as if something had been taken away from them. Some were upset about the placement of difficult gymnastics elements, the number of reps, the loads and the new movements that thinned the herd. It was as if some thought the tests weren’t “appropriate” solely because they didn’t have the fitness to do them or weren’t prepared for them. Some seemed to think a few athletes “deserved” to be at Regionals due to past performance, not current fitness levels.“

On- and upwards. Always work hard and give your best. Do not stress about it, but keep going and never stop. Set realistic goals, and work on them every day. Body, mind and soul need to be in balance. Know your values and principles. Be conscious about where your path is leading you towards. Do not resent if something goes not as planned, but change, if you are unhappy with what the world currently presents to you. Change what you are in control with and accept the rest. Look at your results and decide if you want to be better or if you are happy with them in comparison to the work you put in. Do so without emotions, but using ratio. Then think about the next steps. Plan, work. Repeat.

On the performance side, The Open is simply a reality check. But do not forget the other side. You are not alone on this journey. Honor the community that supports you. Cheer and support your friends when they need you, because at some point you need someone as well. Celebrate your fitness, party together and enjoy the awesome time we spend together!
